BENEFITING: ALMOST HOME FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: May 25, 2013
My name is Kassie Koski. I am devoted dog lover and volunteer through Almost Home Foundation (AHF). As many of you already know, I strive to spend any free time I can volunteering my love and devotion to saving dogs in need. MANY of my friends and family have approached me about how they can help with our rescue. We understand that fostering an animal and/or devoting hours of time is not always an option. Well, here is your chance to still help! This is a quick and easy way to make a difference! I have decided to set a personal goal to run in the "Soldier Field 10 mile". In doing so, I am dedicating my race to raise money for our dogs in need. I am definitely going to train and work hard to earn your donations! :)
Many of the dogs that we save are in very bad shape and need extensive medical attention. One of the most common conditions seen in neglected dogs and puppies is a skin condition called "mange". Most forms of mange are highly contagious and cause varying degrees of skin itchiness, inflammation, hair loss and discomfort. Many people use the term “mange” loosely to refer only to canine scabies, which causes affected dogs to become extremely itchy and to suffer patchy hair loss from excessive scratching, biting and licking. This disease tends to be very uncomfortable for the dog with itchy and sore skin sites. Dogs who are infected with this disease tend to be "surrendered" or "given up" quicker due to costs for treatment and/or the risks of it being contagious to other dogs and/or humans.
That is also why it is especially difficult for rescues to take in dogs with mange. Some dogs are so severely infected that they need to be in a home and quarenteened while receiving treatment. These helpless animals did nothing wrong to deserve this suffering.
This condition is close to my heart for many reasons. I will never forget the day I came across a dog who was literally found at the bottom of a garbage can. He was covered in scabs and bloody sores. This poor dog was so skinny and neglected. However, his heart and compassion shined through and he was ALWAYS wagging his tail and eager to interact with people again.
The money donated to this cause will be used to fund the treatment and provide soothing oils and medicated baths for these poor dogs who are covered in sores and scabs. If you can pledge a dollar, two dollars, whatever, it would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!
Also the dogs you see are Almost Home dogs currently up for adoption that have suffered mange.
