RUNNING FROM STRESS….. FOR A MIND BODY REVOLUTION!
Training for my first NYC half-marathon is a lot of fun and with your help I could make this experience even more special!
This year I decided to run from stress once and for all! Why running from stress? We are human and regardless of our age we all experience stress. Stress has become so present in our everyday life that many of us can’t even imagine their life without stress! We are always on the go, we don’t have time to eat, to sleep or just relax and even breathing is seen as a waste of time and productivity! … I wonder how can we pretend to be productive, when we are all SO stressed?!!
When we are overwhelmed with excessive stress, our life becomes a series of short-term emergencies. We lose the ability to relax and enjoy the moment. We live from crisis to crisis, with no relief in sight so burnout is inevitable.
Untreated, stress can seriously affect performance, health, and well-being. Recent studies show that between 60% and 90% of all doctor visits nowadays are for conditions related to stress. More than 50% of adults in the U.S. report high stress on a daily basis… Apparently you and I are not alone in this!
The bad news is that everyone experiences stress at some point in life. The good one is that we can all make a difference right now and start a mind body revolution!
For this revolution I am asking for your help to support the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine (please visit http://www.massgeneral.org/bhi/) at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
The Benson-Henry Institute is a non-profit scientific and educational organization dedicated to research, teaching, and clinical application of mind body medicine and its integration into all areas of health.
Dr. Herbert Benson, an inspirational author and Harvard cardiologist, is a pioneer in mind body medicine, one of the first Western physicians to bring spirituality and healing into medicine. In his 35+ year career, he has defined the relaxation response and his work serves as a bridge between medicine and religion, East and West, mind and body, and belief and science.
Dr. Benson and his colleagues have treated thousands of people for medical problems poorly addressed by conventional medical practice and their research studies have provided scientific evidence that our mind and our body are connected to each other and we cannot pretend to treat each one separately!
When we are under stress—whether from internal worry or external circumstance—a bodily reaction is triggered, called the "fight or flight" response. When our fight or flight system is activated, we tend to perceive everything in our environment as a possible threat to our survival and our mind tends to go to the worst-case scenario. You start having negative thoughts about yourself, and that internal negative thinking causes even more stress!
The relaxation response, discovered by Dr. Benson, represents a hard-wired antidote to the fight or flight response. The relaxation response is a physical state of deep rest that changes the physical and emotional responses to stress (e.g., decrease in heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension). Mind body techniques are also helpful in improving your health and your quality of life in general and if practiced daily, they can enhance your immune system and make you more resistant to the harmful effects of constant stress.
People at the Benson-Henry Institute view medicine as a three-legged stool: pharmaceuticals are the first leg, surgery and procedures the second. Mind Body interaction is the third, "self-care", leg. Mind Body medicine integrates modern scientific medicine, psychology, nursing, nutrition, exercise physiology and spirituality to enhance the natural healing capacities in our body and our mind that we all have.
Clinical studies over the years have shown the effectiveness of these interventions on a wide range of medical problems caused or made worse by stress, such as hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, pain, migraine, insomnia, GI problems, allergies, chronic fatigue, pms and menopause symptoms, and infertility, among many others.
In addition, the Institute continues to bring relaxation response-based programs to classroom teachers and students, the general public, and training to health care professionals from the U.S. and around the world.
The Benson-Henry Institute is a very special place where you find doctors with a true passion for medicine, able to listen to you and to help you better understand your body and its incredible natural healing capacity. Dr. Benson and his colleagues love what they do and with their research and educational initiatives they continue to show us how we can better cope with stress and become more resilient.
With your help, we can thank all these amazing people working in mind body medicine and help supporting their initiatives to continue our revolution!
