I will be running the 2014 Colfax Marathon in memory of my hero, Jim "Doc" Cover. My father lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in December of 2007. I have made it my goal in life to continue his fight. The marathon is a painful and emotionally draining event. But it does not compare to what my dad, and so many like him, experienced when fighting this terrible disease. I have always dedicated my runs to him. I expect to smile and cry a lot during this marathon experience, as my dad will be on my mind with each step I take.
My dad was simply the best. I couldn't have asked for a better role model. He taught me how to work hard, be thankful, and live life to the fullest. Doc, as his patients often called him, was a gentle and caring dentist. He always went out of his way to make sure his patients were taken care of… even if it meant making a trip into the office at midnight or on the weekend. It wasn't a normal day at the office if he wasn't have a "water gun" fight with the kids that came in for a teeth cleaning. He continued to work while going through chemo/radiation treatments, often doing that on his lunch breaks. As a baseball coach, he taught sportsmanship and the fundamentals of the game. As a family, we spent many summers at the ballpark. I associate the sport of baseball with my dad. He's always on my mind when I watch baseball, whether it be on TV or live at the game. Doc was a simple man with a huge heart.
I'm thankful that an organization like Project Purple has allowed me to run in honor of not only my dad, but for all of those that have been affected by pancreatic cancer.
My fundraising efforts will benefit Project Purple and the fight they wage against pancreatic cancer. More specifically Project Purple provides the following to those affected by the disease:
-Scholarship Program- we provide scholarships to children and grandchildren that have lost a loved one to Pancreatic Cancer or have a loved one fighting. Candidates have to be either enrolled currently in college or high school senior. We provide small scholarships to help and give hope to continue their higher education.
-Patient Financial Aid Program- we provide families fighting PC with financial aid to help pay the every day bills. Examples maybe rent, mortgage, car, utilities, food and anything else associated with everyday living so families can focus on fighting then worrying about paying these bills.
-Research for a cure, early detection test or improving the quality of life – we provide funding for research projects that show promise in finding a cure, early detection test or improving the quality of life for people with Pancreatic Cancer.
