BENEFITING: LOVE MERCY INC
EVENT DATE: Nov 18, 2012
I am running the Philadelphia Marathon for the children who touched my heart while working with orphans and vulnerable youth in South Africa this past winter. Doulos is an orphanage for those who suffer from AIDS, were abandoned, some abused, and have no one left to love them.
Emma van der Merwe started Doulos after nursing her own mother who passed away in August 1998 from AIDS. Doulos provides accommodation and individualized 24 Hour care for 40 children of this pandemic. Most importantly, the children learn the meaning of love and security.
Emma has quickly realized that the needs are far greater than anyone could have anticipated, and Doulos is growing fast. But they desperately need our help! Building has commenced on a new addition, which has allowed Emma to house10 more children, but the center just does not have enough resources. Emma has requested that we raise money to buy additional beds (currently there are multiple children sleeping in each bed), new mattresses for all the beds, and individual closets to give the children a sense of ownerhsip and security.
Let's help Emma grow Doulos so that every child can have a home.
**We have partnered with Love Mercy, a U.S. based charity whose vision is to help develop and empower sustainable communities in rural Africa and to free them of poverty, hunger, sickness and oppression. Noel from Love Mercy is a friend of Emma's who as agreed to help us get our funds to South Africa. Thank you to the team at Love Mercy for your help!
