BENEFITING: Polaris Project
EVENT DATE: May 14, 2016
On May 14th, we're running the Maine Coast Half Marathon and raising funds to help combat human trafficking. Donations will go directly to Polaris, which works on the local, national, and international scale to tackle this problem. We appreciate any help you can give!
Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery in which traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control victims for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts or labor services against his/her will. There are an estimated 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally, and about 4.5 million are trapped in forced sexual exploitation. It's big business for crime organizations, and occurs in all states of the US. Find out more at http://polarisproject.org/facts
To combat this crime, Polaris offers programs serving both labor and sex trafficking victims, using a survivor-centered approach. Polaris "changes the equation" for traffickers and victims - a high-profit, low-risk crime becomes high-risk, low-profit and those who are enslaved are freed from exploitation. Widely recognized as one of the most experienced, multi-dimensional, and knowledgeable entities in the anti-trafficking field, Polaris is working to ensure human trafficking networks are permanently disrupted while hope and justice are restored.
