For the second year, I will be running the LA Marathon with some students from Minds Matter of Los Angeles (MMLA) who want to help raise funds for their fellow classmates. MMLA is a volunteer organization where practically every dollar raised goes towards helping our students prepare for a successful college career. This is done through an extensive tutoring and mentoring program that spans 3 out of the 4 years MMLA students are in high school. MMLA also gives each student the chance to attend a summer program at leading universitiies across the country in their Sophomore and Junior summers so they are better prepared to make the choice of what college they want to attend when they graduate.
One of the students running this year did not get a chance to run last year due to knee injury. She is, however, giving it another shot this year. "This year I have accepted to run the 26.2 miles not only to fundraise for Minds of Los Angeles but also to finish a goal that was not accomplished last year. I am senior and part of the first graduating class for the Los Angeles chapter of Minds Matter."
One of the other students running this year is currently a Junior, and here is a little bit of what she had to say about her philosophy on running. " I am more than a person who runs, I am a runner. Running has been my friend and ally for the last six years of my life. After countless hours of training, running through the streets of East Los Angeles and endless hills at Griffith Park, running has taught me the importance of determination. It takes determination and courage to go that extra mile (both figuratively and literally). As I see it, a 26.2 mile race is simply a manifestation of the strength of the human spirit--anything is possible when you set your mind to it."
Please help our students help themselves and kindly make a donation.
