BENEFITING: GREYHOUND WELFARE INC
EVENT DATE: May 07, 2011
I will be running the FREDERICK HALF MARATHON to raise money for the DC-based Greyhound rescue group: GREYHOUND WELFARE!
Adoption fees alone are not enough to cover the expenses incurred rescuing unwanted Greyhounds from dog tracks! Donations to Greyhound Welfare made through this site go directly to the group and help cover veterinary care, medicine, dog food, and the myriad other costs associated with transporting, caring for, and promoting the adoption of these amazing animals! With more funds, the group will be better situated to take in special needs dogs, including those with racing injuries like broken legs.
Greyhound racing is legal in many states, with 13 dog tracks operating in Florida alone. While Greyhounds have a life expectancy of 12-14 years, their racing careers usually end by the time they are 2-4 years old. Approximately 20,000 racing Greyhounds are retired every year! It takes a tremendous amount of effort from rescue groups to get as many ex-racers as possible into loving homes, where they can live out the rest of their lives healthfully and happily!
The pics on this page are of Greyhound Welfare dogs, including our two pups Jasper and Luka! The vid is of an actual "haul" showing Greyhound Welfare volunteers meeting a truck of ex-racers from Florida at a Maryland rest stop in the early morning. After the pups stretch their legs, they are taken to their foster homes where their new lives as retired racing Greyhounds begin!
Please join me in raising money for this great cause! Consider sponsoring me per mile as I run my first half marathon for the Greyhounds!
