BENEFITING: Foundation Fighting Blindness, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
My mother, Lucia Finocchiaro Backer, is an incredibly strong and inspirational woman, who along with my father, raised my brothers and I with all the love, kindness, and generosity one could ever want. My mother has retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a genetic degenerative eye disease, which initially manifested itself in “night blindness” in her twenties, but now she has lost all vision in her right eye and nearly all vision in her left. Regardless of the challenges and frustrations she faces, she has never let her disability get in the way of raising her family, of being an amazing mother and grandmother, of traveling around the world, or of taking on the projects or hobbies she enjoys.
The Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) (www.blindness.org) is a national research organization that is dedicated to finding treatments, preventions, and cures for RP, macular degenerations, and other retinal degenerative diseases. Since 1971, FFB has raised over $450 million to support critical research that may one day lead to the cure of these diseases. The culmination of more than three decades of research has resulted in discovering the building blocks for cures through novel treatments like gene therapy, pharmaceutical therapy, nutrition, drug delivery, and retinal cell transplantation.
