THE STORY:

The first time I went to Africa was in July 2011 where I led the EmONC team - Emergency Obstetrics and Neonatal Care division for Kissito Healthcare International. The purpose was two-fold: First, to provide hands-on clinical training in the management of high-risk pregnancies and deliveries and to run a comprehensive training course in the managementment of high-risk pregnancies for maternal and fetal benefit... To decrease the devestatingly high maternal and newborn death rates in this beautiful part of the world. In December I returned for a second training - this time to Uganda and Ethiopia - 2 countries, 3 comprehensive training courses, over a very intense 10day period! It was a multi-disciplinary approch encompassing protocol teaching and hands on training for OB midwives, physicians and nurses.

Going to Africa and experiencing first hand the challenges of managing high risk pregnancies with the short-comings of medical resources prompted me take on the task of raising money to build a second operating room on the existing hospital of Bugobero Uganda.
