BENEFITING: Opportunity Fund for Developing Countries
EVENT DATE: Jan 22, 2012
Grassroots and volunteer-powered, OFDC invests in people. More specifically, OFDC empowers women with microcredit via Village Saving and Loan (VSLA) programs and training, educates children with sponsorship, and enhances health for all with mosquito net distribution and funding for water wells and latrines (villagers provide 20% of the costs and volunteer labor). All focus areas are village collaborative and culturally sensitive - dedicated, skilled, and heart-felt volunteers from both sides of the ocean learning from each other.
Efficient and diligent stewards of your donated dollars, OFDC concentrates on what really matters: long term solutions to locally identified problems. Focusing on remote areas of Kenya, your donation actuates sustainability, self-reliance and human achievement.
I am running my first marathon on January 22, 2012 and I wanted to use this occasion to help raise funds for a non-profit I believe in 100%. Nine years ago I was able to visit Kenya and see first-hand the wonderful work OFDC is accomplishing in rural villages in Kenya.
Overhead is barebones with this organization--your donation really is going to the simple but life altering causes described. From microcredit loans for women, sponsoring children through school or helping with basic sanitation, every dollar makes a difference.
I've set a high goal here because I know the power of social networking. Give what you can and then ask others to do the same with the social networking options! Let's see the power of social giving in action!
Once more, I wouldn't be soliciting a donation from friends and family (and their friends and family) if this weren't a cause I fully trust.
