THE STORY:

Sam Mazur wrote -

If you told me when I was a kid, that one day, I'd enjoy waking up early to go running, I'd think you were nuts. I was on my high school track team and didn't even do the running events (yay, discus!). But here I am, a weekend jogger turned long-distance runner, about to take on my first 26.2 in the New York City Marathon.

Why now? So, this is where things get slightly awkward and personal. This year, I reached the same age at which my mom lost her battle against ovarian cancer. Mom was always a bit of a dynamo. She worked her way through college, had three boys, her own CPA business, then a Master's degree, while keeping lots of close friends and volunteer activities. We'd often see her in her home office, on two adding machines at once, while talking on the telephone. She was the shepherd of our wolf pack and the glue of her extended family. It's natural to idolize your own mom, but she was really quite a lady and it was a great honor for our family when there wasn't enough room at her funeral for all the people who came.

40 seems pretty old when you're a kid, but it sure feels young after turning it, and while life moves on, and the grief goes away, her untimely death never makes any more sense. Nearly three decades later, ovarian cancer still remains a devious disease, striking silently with little warning. The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund is investigating new treatments and early detection screenings, and I invite you to please donate in any amount and help protect other moms, sisters, wives and daughters. It will make my jaunt through New York that much more meaningful.

Whew— well I sure hope that wasn't too much of a downer. I'm really looking forward to this race and if you're going to be along the route on November 2, please let me know.
