"To ensure the future of wild cats through scientific leadership and global conservation action."
And wild cats can use all the help they can get. Poaching and habitat loss have placed them in a precarious position. Here are some statistics from Panthera:
- 100 years ago, as many as 100,000 wild tigers lived in Asia. Today, there are fewer than 3,200.
- Lions are classified as a "vulnerable" species by the IUCN and are considered "endangered" in Central and West Africa.
- Jaguars occupy less than 40% of their historic range.
- The remaining population of wild snow leopards is believed to be between 3,500 and 7,000 individuals.
Unless a concerted effort is made, we will lose our wild cats and the ecosystems they anchor. These things not only enrich our lives, they are linked to our survival as a species.
Believe it or not, I'm not trying to bum you out here. Organizations like Panthera are making a difference (click on the cat names above to check out some of Panthera's programs).
But Panthera can't do it alone. It's our duty to support the causes we believe in. That's why I'm running in support of Panthera. I hope you will join me and make a small donation on their behalf. Let's do our part to save big cats.
