RUNNING FOR RILEY
Organized by: Lori Gaon
EVENT DATE Nov 02, 2014
As some of you may know, Reese, my daughter had a friend from preschool/Hebrew school, Riley Sandler, who very suddenly passed away a little over a month go. I cannot imagine what Riley's parents, Mackenzie and Ian are going through, but everyday my heart aches for them.
Riley, a beautiful girl, who like Reese, was about to enter the 4th grade. She was at sleep away camp and apparently suffered from a rare occurrance of respiratory arrest.
Explaining this to Reese was difficult. Sloan and I, and the other parents of Riley's friends discussed the best approach in telling our children. We finally sat Reese down and shared with her the tragic news. She listened and immediately grabbed her rainbow loom out of her room and began making a bracelet. At first I assumed that she was tuning out what we just told her, but instead it became a proud mommy moment for me.... "I'm gonna make and sell bracelets to raise money for Riley's charity," Reese said. "There are always stories like this in the American Girl Doll magazine." So far, she has raised $350.00, and she is trying to get a fundraiser underway at her school!
In five weeks, Riley's foundation, has raised almost half a million dollars!
Once again, I am running the NYC Marathon as a volunteer guide for Achilles. I've been assigned to Anthony from Tennessee. He has some type of congenital leg disorder and wears a brace on one leg. I'm so excited to assist Anthony cross that finish line on November 2nd, but I'll be running for Riley. For every mile that Tony and I cross, I want it to be a way to remember Riley and raise money for a cause that is meaningful to Riley's parents.
So please support my 26.2 run by donating to help promote and support the health and welfare of children. All money will go towards Riley's foundation.
