During the second semester of my gap year, I spent 3 months living in Panajachel, Guatemala, interning at Starfish: an NGO that empowers indigenous girls to break cycles of gender exclusion and create transformational change in their communities. These "Girl Pioneers" are unbelievably bright, hardworking, persevering, and inspiring. They come from fathers who work in the fields, and mothers who never made it past kindergarten. They will be the first in their families to earn college degrees and dream of becoming social workers, doctors, and lawyers. Starfish provides Girl Pioneers with 75% school scholarships, intensive mentorship from Guatemalan women who share their backgrounds, and strong family support. Alongside two of my best friends, both shining examples of empowered women, I will be running 13 miles to raise money for the powerful work that Starfish does. These girls are truly a generation of change in Guatemala, and need our help! Please join me in unlocking their potential.
