Katie is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer from Turkmenistan currently in training for the New York Marathon on November 6. When she began training for the NYC race she knew her many miles of running could benefit a good cause! What better cause to support than educational programs for Turkmen students?
Katie contacted TYCVF and the brainstorming began. The decision was made to raise $1000 to support the Work & Travel Loan Program, an interest free loan for Turkmen students who want to work in the U.S. to earn money for college. The U.S. Work and Travel program requires students to pay upfront for their travel and visa costs---about $2500. Most Turkmen students don't have access to that amount of money, so TYCVF started a loan program to make the oppportunity accessible.
The Work & Travel Loan Program was launched in 2010 and two Turkmen students used the loans to travel to the U.S. and work for the summer. The program not only helped Dovran and Ruslan pay for their college expenses, they also had an eye-opening culturual experience and language immersion! We want more Turkmen students to have that opportunity!
Help TYCVF offer additional loans to deserving Turkmen students for summer 2012! Katie's doing the hard part--let's back her up by donating to this cause! Go Katie!
