Elephants in their natural habitat can walk over 2,000 miles a year--up the a half-marathon distance each day! So, even though we're not technically running for charity, Nikki and I thought that it would be nice to try to raise a little money for an incredible elephant charity, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
Elephants are facing a golbal crisis right now, as the increased ivory trade and high-tech weapons available to poachers means than an elephant is being killed as often as once every 15 minutes. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (as supported by this US-based branch, the US Friends) is involved in numerous campaigns for conservation and awareness, as well as running an orphange for elephants in Kenya who have lost their parents to poaching, disease or other factors. You can find out more info on the Trust at http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/.
And remember to come out and see all of the incredible athletes and fundrasiers at the ING NYC Marathon on November 3rd!
