WUFPAC Runs Richmond
Organized by: Lauren Toomey
EVENT DATE Nov 15, 2014
I was recently honored with the wonderful opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors for the Women Under Forty Political Action Committee (WUFPAC), a bi-partisan PAC committed to supporting female candidates under forty with state and federal races for elected office.
In support of all these young women in races across the country, I am fundraising for WUFPAC through my second half-marathon. While my finish line is in Richmond, theirs is elected office, and ours is a better future.
Contribute to my fundraising goal of $2,000, and show your support by sharing this page & using #WUFPACRunsRichmond online! Thank you in advance to all of you who help me reach my goal!
Special thanks to: My Mom & Dad for your encouragement and success in convincing me there is nothing I can't do! My little brother Tooms for his inspiration and awesome music to run to! My family for all of their support! My friends who tell me I'm crazy to run 13.1 miles (it just makes me want to do it more!). To my boyfriend and training coach, Nick. And of course, to the WUFPAC!
If you’re asking if I’m a feminist, the answer is yes. Read how.
I truly believe that I can impact the world, and as a young woman, I’m driven to do so. I am not alone in that; this I know. Knowing, and meeting so many of these smart, capable women has me feeling refreshed and energized.
The capable part there is key. I do not believe anyone should enjoy any privilege or suffer any discrimination because of his or her gender. Based on the ACTUAL definition and not on the cultural-/party-altered versions, that makes me a feminist. Who knew?! But, I’m good with that, really good.
(To address common misconceptions)
- Does that make me no longer a Republican? – Nope, still a GOP girl.
- Can I still be girly, wear pink, watch BRAVO and cry at the sad parts of rom-coms? – Yes, because being a feminist doesn’t mean abandoning any of that.
- Will I support any female candidate just because she is a woman? – Not a chance. My support goes to whomever I feel is most capable for the job.
- Does it mean I think women should run the world, and men should be moved underground and only used for breeding stock? – No. Just no.
And stay tuned for race updates!
