In 2009, Gamma Phi Omega sisters Carol, Elsa, Suzie, and Melinda ran the Rock N Roll Half Marathon in Chicago. After completing the race, Carol, Elsa, and Suzie started talking about getting other sisters to join in. Running Swans has become a way for sisters of Gamma Phi Omega to connect through the love of running and sisterhood, and promote healthy living in a safe environment. With over 200 members in the private group, new runners and veterans alike are posting questions, motivation, and invitations to races on a daily basis. The Rock N Roll Chicago events have become an annual event for Running Swans, as well as a fundraising platform for supporting charities in alignment with the mission and vision of the group. This year, Running Swans is supporting Chicago Run, a local non-profit serving 16,500 public school students in 32 diverse communities with a mission to promote the health and wellness of Chicago children through innovative, engaging, and sustainable youth running programs. Donations go directly to supporting healthy programming for Chicago Public School students.
