EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
I met Paul on Monday, April 15, 2013.
I had the honor of becoming Paul's primary nurse in Beth Israel's Trauma ICU, and day after day I grew to know better and better his wonderfully loving and tightly bonded family. It was impossible not to love the Norden's. By far, they are one of the most selfless, devoted, and loyal group of friends and family I have ever encountered in my nursing career.
Victims of this malicious and hateful act, the group of lifelong Stoneham friends were all spectators near the finish line waiting to cheer on their friend. Paul Norden and his brother JP were among the group most severely injured, and separated across the street from each other in different hospitals.
An incredibly long road to recovery-- several surgical revisions, wound debridements, and skin grafts-- these two men have endured unbelievable feats to regain strength, relearn daily routines, and the very act of walking. It was on this road that we all had the extreme honor and pleasure of meeting the Semper Fi group: An unbelievably inspiring wounded Marines and Sailors who refuse to succumb to any tragic loss of limb, and through determination have run, swam, and cycled through hundreds of athletic events.
I watched these servicemen and women visit our hospital, tour the surgical unit, and meet our Marathon victims, telling their stories, and teaching wisdom of how they overcame their grief to run and fight again with such hope in pure athletic spirit. They are absolutely some of the most honorable heroes I have ever met.
This year, out of my love and respect for both these groups of people, I wish to run for their team in the 2014 Boston Marathon, and raise as much money as possible to give to such wonderful causes.
