Running the Portland Marathon to benefit Auckland NICU

Organized by: Wynne Meyer

EVENT DATE Oct 04, 2015

THE STORY:

I equate running a marathon with being a parent in the neonatal intensive care unit. It requires hope, perseverance, strength and lots of support from family and friends. I am asking for your help in acknowledging the amazing doctors and nurses who spent weeks, days, and long hours with us and took loving care of Hayden in his early days. Hayden was born at 25 weeks weighing only 1 lb 3 oz, which required extensive medical care. We were so fortunate to have such a positive experience during such a challenging time. The nurses went out of their way to be kind, helpful and friendly--knowing that we were from the U.S. and far away from close friends and family. They were professional and yet, the most caring individuals I've ever met. I've stayed in close touch with one of the nurses and with her help, the funds raised will go directly to the nurses and staff at Auckland NICU.

We visited Hayden a few weeks after he was born so saw first hand how much care he needed. It wasn't until my own son was born that I realised how far that care goes. Auckland nicu diagnosed and treated my 4 day old son for meningitis. Thanks to them we have a healthy 12 month old now, brightening our world with his laughter. I still thank the drs and nurses every day, and I will always remember how loving the nurses who cared for him were. 2 years ago
