THE DYLAN SCHOPP SUNSHINE FOUNDATION
A smile so big and bright it could light up the night sky, laughter so contagious it could heard for miles this was Dylan Schopp. Energetic, outgoing, adventurous he was born December 28, 1993 a loving brother, son and friend. Dylan had a special spirit that impacted all those he came in contact with. No one could begin to imagine that the world would loose a bright ray of sunshine on February 12, 2015.
Suicide is a tragedy which most of us believe we are immune to but the reality is we are not. Statistics provided by the CDC, revealed that in 2013 (the most recent year for which full data is available) there were 41,149 deaths from suicide in the United States. This means that roughly 12.6 people in every 100,000 take their own lives each year. This equates to 113 suicides each day or one every 13 minutes. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention 90% of the people at the time of their death had a potentially treatable undiagnosed mental disorder.
My Team and I will be running The Fort Lauderdale A1A 5k on 2/13/16 to raise awareness and stop the stories that being with "If we only knew...". All monies will go directly to The Dylan Schopp Foundation a 501 (3) c non-for profit created in memory of Dylan. The Foundation strives to better the lives of children and young adults in hopes of preventing tragedies like this from ever occurring again. It's main goal is educating people and increasing public discussion about suicide prevention and awareness.
