Welcome to the Running with Doug Reich community page. At the age of 60, I am embarking on a journey to run the New York City Marathon. This is not a personal goal, but a path to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). 100% of the funds raised during my run will be given to ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI). WIth your support, I believe we can raise $1,000 for each mile I run.
My nephew Corey was diagnosed and began his battle with ALS in 2008, while a junior at Middlebury College. Although this can be an intimidating diagnosis, Corey has never faltered in his battle. Eight years later he is still vivaciously fighting ALS. Corey is currently an assistant coach for the Piedmont High School Tennis Team (his alma mater), he is an enthusiastic Oakland A’s fan (attending over 75 games in 2013), and enjoys drinking and critiquing craft beer. Nobody motivates me more than Corey, and it is for him that I am running the New York City Marathon at the age of 60.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neuromuscular degenerative disorder for which there is currently no cure and no effective treatment. Over time this failure leads to paralysis, and is eventually fatal. There are over 5,000 new cases of ALS diagnosed every year, about fifteen cases every day, with a given life expectancy of 2-4 years.
Although these facts seem daunting, there is bountiful optimism surrounding the ALS conversation. The ALS Therapy Development Institute is at the forefront of this hopefulness. Since its founding in 1999, ALS TDI has evolved to become the leader in ALS research and the premier not-for-profit ALS research institute. The vast research preformed at ALS TDI has led to breakthroughs contributing to a higher quality of life as well as a reduction in symptoms for those living with ALS. As one of the largest research programs in the world completely devoted to ALS, over 87% of the ALS TDI budget is applied entirely to research.
Corey Reich and all other persons diagnosed with ALS need our support. Each and every person diagnosed with ALS valiantly fights this disease; however they cannot do it alone.
Help me run the NYC Marathon. Help ALS TDI find the cure for Corey, and everyone diagnosed with ALS. Please Donate Today.
