EVENT DATE: Oct 06, 2012
In the beginning of July of this year, my dad went to the hospital for severe pain he was having in his abdomen. After a checkup and MRI, he was transferred to UW medical center for an emergency surgery. Once out of surgery, he was sent to the intensive care unit, where he stayed for the next week.
During most of that time, he was unconscious, being sedated until his next numerous surgeries he had planned. The doctors were still trying to figure out themselves what was wrong with him but they warned us he could die. Finally, they diagnosed him with a rare disease called Polycythemia Vera. In simple terms, it is a blood disease that causes over production of red blood cells. This over production leads to an increased likelihood of heart attack or stroke. Fortunately for my dad, the disease caused death of a large portion of his intestines and not of his heart or brain, which could have been more fatal.
It has been almost a month now and my dad is still in the hospital. He is out of ICU but it is still going to be a long road to recovery, and unfortunately, there is no cure for this disease. I am running this half marathon in October to raise money that will be directly donated to an research foundation that is in a current search for a cure of this rare disease. For more information about the foundation I am fundraising for, there is a link on my page.
Whether it is $5, $20, or $100, every dollar counts. Thank you so much for your consideration.
