The 2012 NYC Marathon is set to take place this weekend, only six days after the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. Many runners, myself included, have mixed feelings about the logistics of all this. Many of my friends still don't have power, their neighborhoods are underwater, and debris is scattered through their streets. How can we ask the police and other emergency personnel to block intersections for this race when there are so many people out there who need them?
See, the thing is, the NYC Marathon has always inspired people to strive, to hope, to attempt to accomplish the unthinkable. I started running only three and a half years ago, after the death of my partner. It was running that helped me survive the darkest period of my life. As the victims of Sandy struggle to cope with displacement, hopelessness and even death, perhaps the marathon can help inspire them to rise up and fight for their lives.
But money helps too. The money we raise here will go to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, specifically to relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
Help us run Sandy outta town!
