BENEFITING: CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION
EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2017
EVENT DATE: May 07, 2017
This will be my third time running in the Pittsburgh Marathon. Previously I did the full marathon in 2015 and I was part of Team Natalie along with my wife Mary Ann in the relay portion of the 2016 marathon. I am Natalie Soxman’s grandfather (Pap-Pap) and her God father. I cherish these two roles and take them very seriously.
Natalie is an energetic, adorable four year old force of nature. She plans on running in the Kids Marathon this year with her big sister Hailey. Love absolutely radiates from her and you cannot help feeling like you are the most loved person on the planet when she is holding your hand or hugging you. Everybody in her life will agree with this and I am sure that every parent and grandparent can relate to this.
We all want to keep our children and grandchildren safe and healthy. Natalie has Cystic Fibrosis and she is becoming aware of how much different her life needs to be than her sister’s, cousins’, classmates’ and friends’. They don’t need to take enzymes (nine capsules) before meals or snacks; they don’t need to take thirty minutes out of their playtime two or three times a day for breathing treatments; they might not have been held back from participating in activities for fear of getting sick; they haven’t been hospitalized to treat persistent coughs; they haven’t come home from the hospital with an IV for antibiotic treatments and they are not facing the uncertain future that this incurable disease brings.
My daughter Lindsey and her husband Doug have worked diligently since Natalie was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis to take care of this precious child and to raise awareness and funds for curing Cystic Fibrosis. In my eyes they are true super heroes. Natalie’s extended family and Lindsey and Doug’s close friends all take part in fundraising to cure Cystic Fibrosis whether it’s participating in fundraising walks, bicycle rides, marathons and hikes or donating time and money to further research for a cure. It is inspirational to see the outpouring of this love and support for our Natalie. My hope is that you will join us and support the research for a cure by donating to our fundraising effort. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Our Run to Cure CF team in Pittsburgh continues to grow each year, as do our research efforts and the progress we’ve made in the search for a cure. Real progress toward a cure has been made, but the lives of young people are still cut far too short. Won’t you join us in continuing the search for a cure? Accept the challenge today and help add tomorrows to the lives of those living with cystic fibrosis by registering to run or making a donation to one of our dedicated team members!
We've made incredible progress in the fight against cystic fibrosis, but we still need to strive to cross that finish line and find a cure!
What Is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections, and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond.
