BENEFITING: RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS PROJECT
EVENT DATE: May 27, 2013
On too many occasions, I have seen my mother struggle through the debilitating pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis, a symmetric, inflammatory process of unknown etiology. It typically leads to deformity through the stretching of tendons and ligaments and destruction of joints through the erosion of cartilage and bone. If it is untreated or unresponsive to therapy, inflammation and joint destruction lead to loss of physical function, inability to carry out daily tasks of living, and maintenance of employment.
Thankfully, she does not have the extreme joint deformities seen in many hospitalized patients. This disease is hard to treat, requiring the physician to balance a fine line between the benefits of medication vs. serious side effects. Scientist are developing safer, more effective treatments but they rely heavily on donations to fund their progress. This is why I ask for your help as I run the Capital of Texas Triathlon. Thank you!
