Hello family & friends,
As many of you know I am in for 2013! I have applied for the NYC Marathon every year since 2009 and last year I was finally awarded the no-so-coveted 'three years denied by the lottery, fourth year you're in' but alas the devastating Super Storm Sandy had a plan of her own. So, for the second year in a row I am in for NYC and God willing I will cross that finish line with a huge smile on my face, I have waited long enough!
When I was 18 years old my mom, Myra Barrett, ran this race in 4:12:42. Of course back then I wasn't even a runner and had no idea what an impact running would eventually have on my life. I would like to run this most amazing race and while doing so raise awareness for movement disorders. Run to move.
My mom has been diagnosed with parkinsonism plus cerebellar degeneration (say that three times fast), more commonly known as parkinsonism plus or atypical parkinson's. This fancy-sounding disease is wreaking havoc on her mobility. The one-time marathoner now has a hard time walking, speaking, seeing, writing, and swallowing. She is the strongest mom I know and I want future daughters going through this disease to have hope for a cure.
In addition, my Aunt Marilyn has advanced Parkinson's and has been battling it for twenty years. My Dad's Uncle John was also recently diagnosed. And my very good friend's mom has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. I have gone from someone who knew what the disease meant by watching Michael J. Fox to someone who knows all too well what this horrible disease means.
I want to run for those who can't due to movement disorders. I want to run this race for my mom. The Parkinson's Disease Foundation funds all kinds of research, including some research for parkinsonism. Together we can find a cure.
