The Story

EVENT DATE: Sep 10, 2017

Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo raises critical funds for the Ruth Roby Glancy Animal Health Complex and veterinary care for the animals at the Detroit Zoo.

We thought you would appreciate seeing an example of what your participation in Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo helps us do. Below is a link to a short video about the recent wellness examinations given to four chimpanzees – Bubbles, Trixi, Imara and Abby.

Please click here to watch a short video about the exams.

These wellness exams, which took place in the state-of-the-art Ruth Roby Glancy Animal Health Complex, required weeks of preparation and planning.  The Detroit Zoological Society’s three full-time veterinarians were assisted by several human medicine specialists, including ultrasound sonographers, cardiologists and an anesthesiologist, as well as their veterinary technician colleagues.

The chimpanzees received physical and dental exams, vaccinations, bloodwork, X-rays of their lungs, knees and hips, and ultrasounds of their abdomens and hearts.  Because heart disease becomes more prevalent in great apes as they age, the chimps also received heart monitor implants while they were under anesthesia.  These recorders will take measurements for up to three years and transmit data via Bluetooth technology, providing valuable information about the animals’ heart health.

We are happy to report that Bubbles, Trixi, Imara and Abby are all doing well.  Their keepers and the veterinary staff continue to work hard to ensure the chimps’ health and welfare.  Your support of the Detroit Zoological Society and Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo helps us to provide excellent care like this for all of the animals that live at the Detroit Zoo.

Your help is needed to ensure that the animals receive the care they need to stay healthy. So whether you like to run or walk, support the Detroit Zoo and Run Wild with us!

If your friends or family want to support our cause but can't make it to the race, or if they simply want to cheer you on as you help out a worthy organization, it's now possible for them to sponsor you for the event.

Each individual who raises $250 or more will receive a special Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo gift pack, which will include four tickets for a day at the Zoo, a plush animal and a reusable water bottle. Race entry fees will not be counted toward awards.
