If you know me, you probably know that I am a runner. I am not particularly fast, but I enjoy it immensely. That said, running a marathon has never been something I wanted to do. Why in the world would I want to put myself through that much training? For what gain? Then Angel City Pit Bulls became an official charity partner of the ASICS 2014 Los Angeles Marathon... and now I cant believe how excited I am. Seriously. Somehow the thought of doing a 20-mile training run actually sounds fun. I guess this is what happens when you believe in something. The exposure we will receive as an official charity is such a tremendous opportunity for a wonderful organization that continues to change perceptions and improve the welfare of animals in the City of Angels. I am so proud to be a part of this incredible team.
So who are we and what do we do? Angel City Pit Bulls (ACPB) is an education and advocacy group for pit bull type dogs in Los Angeles. We educate in the community, work directly with the shelters to increase adoptions and reduce owner relinquishment, provide free spay/neuter and training for economically challenged families, and promote great dogs through our rescue. Most of the dogs in our program come from South Los Angeles, an area with the highest number of pit bull intakes into the shelter system, as well as the highest rate of euthanasia. Every one of these dogs faced an uncertain future with a less than 50% chance of rescue or adoption. Every one of them was a life saved and every one of them will go on to change perceptions.
In 2013, ACPB took in 115 new dogs into our program and successfully adopted 117 into permanent loving homes. All dogs in our program live in foster homes where they learn basic house-manners, socialization, obedience training, and play manners with other animals. We could not accomplish this without the incredible generosity of our supporters. To give you an idea of where your tax-deductible donation will go, here is a summary of some of our life-saving expenses:
$50: The Food Sponsor: Provides a monthly supply of high protein, grain-free, premium diet and a enriching beef knuckle bone for one dog.
$100: The Spay/Neuter Sponsor: Provides a spay/neuter surgery for one dog.
$150: The Basic Rescue Sponsor: Saves the life of one dog by covering the shelter rescue fee, flea-meds, deworming, a one-month supply of high-protein grain-free premium food, and a collar and leash.
$250: The TLC Sponsor (Basic Rescue Sponsor + Vetting): All of the above plus a trip to the vet and meds for a dog with a simple shelter acquired infection.
$300: The Puppy Sponsor (TLC Package + Vaccines): All of the above provided for a new puppy plus all required vaccines.
$400: The Community Puppy Sponsor (Puppy Sponsor + Spay/Neuter): Puppies entering the shelter system are put at risk for contracting infections. Intercepting these dogs before they enter the shelter improves their chance of survival.
$500: The Mange Puppy Sponsor (Puppy Sponsor + Mange Treatment until resolved): In an overcrowded shelter system, puppies with severe demodex are frequently euthanized. This treatable condition can take several months to clear. In the shelter, these dogs are rarely adopted, leaving rescue as an only option for survival.
$750: The ICU Sponsor (TLC Package + Veterinary Boarding): The TLC package plus an admission to a vet hospital for a severe respiratory infection, shelter acquired pneumonia, or virus requiring isolation.
$1000: The Spay/Neuter Angel: Provides funding for 10 dogs to receive spay/neuter surgery.
