Rural Business Africa's aim is to provide training and support to rural communities in Southern Africa to help them start and grow their own businesses. Our pilot program, launched with strong support from community leaders in a rural area outside of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (not far from the border with South Africa) in May of 2014, offered training to a group of enthusiastic local women on methods of collection and preservation of the large volume of mangoes that traditionally went to waste after every harvest. By preserving the fruit that has otherwise gone to waste, a surplus was created that afforded the women the opportunity to create a selection of recipes, including jam, jellies, canned whole fruit, and chutneys that could be sold at market to generate an income to provide for their family's basic needs.
