BENEFITING: RURAL BUSINESS AFRICA
EVENT DATE: Jan 01, 2015
Rural Business Africa is a nonprofit corporation based in Silicon Valley, California that provides training and support to rural communities in Southern Africa to help start and grow their own businesses. The objective is to generate income for rural families that will enable them to pay for basic needs that improve life and the community at large. Rural Business Africa is an independent non-profit organization and is registered 501(c)(3). All donations are tax deductible.
Specifically, your donation will facilitate the purchase of materials (glass jars, sugar, pectin, etc.) and help to provide training for local women in a rural area outside of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe in canning techniques that would preserve the fruit that most often just rots and goes to waste when it can't be immediately consumed.
The goal is to send two trainers to provide a full one-day training to five local group leaders. Rural Business Africa will provide jars and seals trucked in from South Africa, sugar procured locally, and pectin brought in from the US. The canning process will be executed by the women in training over five fires in separate cooking huts, with the trainers splitting their time between huts to answer any questions and supervise quality to be sure the crop is successfully canned.
With a selection of recipes, the groups will make jam, jellies, canned whole fruit, and chutneys. The women will own whatever products they produce, which can either be saved for later consumption by their families, or sold at market to generate income that can be used for food, ,clothes, and school fees for their children.
