BENEFITING: PRIZM FOUNDATION
Im raising funds for rural women and girls because many of them live without access to basic health and sanitation, including something many of us take for granted – sanitary pads. I grew up in Rural Zimbabwe where more than half of all families live below the poverty line, education is expensive and not always available. For this reason, schooling is usually reserved for the men, leaving women stuck at home. Many girls miss days of school each month, or even drop out altogether because they don’t have sanitary towels. The only other alternative for some girls is sleeping with men for money to buy the pads, or using natural substitutes such as leaves and cow dung, risking serious and sometimes life threatening infections.
