Meet Rusty and James:
This is Rusty Wilkins and James Anderson. They are a duo running team of cousins hoping to be entered into the Boston Marathon for the first time in 2016 and would like to raise $5000 for a running chair. Rusty is an 18 year old high school student living with his family in Topsham, Maine. His dad is a retired veteran who served three tours in Iraq. His mom is a special needs teacher. Rusty was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth. He is unable to walk and has very limited ability to use his limbs as well as communicate verbally. As a die-hard New England sports fan, everyone in the house can tell when Big Papi hits a home run or Tom Brady throws a touchdown pass based on Rusty’s reaction from the living room. Rusty has the soul of an athlete, competing in the Special Olympics and participating as a team manager. At school, Rusty was developing his interactive computer skills by tracking his cousin James’s racing results as a UNH track athlete for the past four years. In the summer of 2014 inspiration struck and the two decided to try racing together. After experiencing the joy it brought to both of them, it was clear a team had been formed. In past races James and Rusty have borrowed a racing chair from Team Hoyt New England. A new chair custom fit to Rusty will give them the freedom to compete when and where they wish and will provide Rusty that feeling of being in the thick of the competition as they try and break new boundaries and create new personal records.
