THE STORY:

Today I got a very unexpected message from my aunt in conservative Oklahoma, "Crying over my lunch. One of my members who has become more of a friend then just someone you deal with professionally just died. These two ladies have shared their lives for many years. No matter who called they would say this is Ruth&Sharon;. Well Ruth died yesterday so Sharon called me to set up an account for people to donate to so she can pay for a simple memorial service. I took care of business but now I am much closer to understanding your stance on same sex marriage Sharon now has no financial help. Love ya"

My aunt, Jannette Logsdon Oclaray, has had a long journey into understanding my world, and I'm so proud of her compassion and open heart. She's a remarkable lady, who never asks for favors. We've not always been close, but her consistent love and the arc of her understanding have showed me the potential of family to help the LGBT movement.

But family is more than who we're related to. These two women are my family, too--my LGBT family--living a modest, pioneering life in rural Oklahoma, quietly partnered for 20 years, living in a trailer, and raising their grand kids on minimum wage. And one of them really needs our help at a really awful time, when tragedy strikes unexpectedly and swiftly.

When I talked to my aunt just now, I talked to her about what being part of this community means to me. What I didn't tell her is that I believe the best part of me is rooted in my gay self...my compassion, my love, my sense of community, and my profound hope that it really could get better--not by accident, but through little miracles of spirit. In my heart, this is how I choose to advance the cause of LGBTQ equality...through acts of kindness with one another, even strangers. Please join me, and let's show what our community can do when we unite in love and compassion to help a family member in need. I'd love to match whatever we can raise.
