Raising Readers, One Book at a Time.
Rx for Reading Detroit is a non-profit literacy initiative sponsored by the University of Detroit Mercy. Since 2014 we have distributed over 50,000 new and gently used books to low-income children and families in Detroit.
Rx for Reading was founded on the principle that literacy is social justice. Every child in our community has the right to read. Committed to the belief that “it takes a village to raise a child,” we have partnered with over 50 community organizations that want to incorporate literacy into their own work for children and families. Our partners include low-income health, dental and WIC clinics, Head Start programs, homeless shelters, community centers, and churches.
Our mission is to expand access to high-quality children’s books and support families in reading with their children. We work to eliminate the opportunity gap in our community by ensuring universal access to age-appropriate reading material.
We Need You!
Rx for Reading is staffed entirely by student volunteers at the University of Detroit Mercy. 100% of donations are used to support families in reading with their children.
Your donation allows us to establish Rx for Reading libraries across the city and purchase new books for children and families to take home and keep. A $150 donation sponsors a new Rx for Reading library. A $25 donation allows us to purchase 10 brand new books for children to read and love.
