RX for Reading Detroit is a project organized by University of Detroit Mercy students, faculty, and staff. Together, we are working to bring literature and literacy to kids in our community.

Reading aloud to children is one of the most powerful tools we have for promoting healthy childhood development and long-lasting educational benefits.  In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends daily reading as a key part of a healthy childhood.

Unfortunately, not all children in our community have the same access to books and reading. According to the landmark Hart and Risley report, children in low-income families hear as many as 30 million fewer words than children in professional families by the age of 3. This "word gap" has direct ramifications for children as they go on in school. In the state of Michigan, only 31 percent of all Michigan students and only 19 percent of low-income students are reading proficiently in the fourth grade (Annie E. Casie Foundation Report 2013).  These statistics are especially alarming because reading proficiently by 3rd grade is the single most important predictor of high school graduation and a successful career.

We believe that one of the best ways to remedy our nation's achievement gap is to support parents and families in reading to their children and to create reading relationships between college students and younger kids in our community.

Some of the Benefits of Reading to Children:
Prepares children for long-term success in school
Expands vocabulary
Develops emergent literacy skills such as alphabet recognition
Improves listening skills
Strengthens parent-child relationships
Teaches children social and relationship skills
Enhances empathy and perspective-taking
Gives children language to talk about their own feelings
Establishes a positive relationship with books and learning

RX for Reading has three initiatives that your donation will help support.
1) We collect gently used, high-quality children's books for classroom libraries and clinic and hospital waiting rooms.
2) We purchase new books to give to children in local Head Start programs and elementary schools, emphasizing age-appropriate language, inclusive themes, and diverse characters and authors.
3) We provide instructional material to children and parents about the importance and FUN of reading together!

RX for Reading is Hands On:
In addition to distributing used and new books, University of Detroit Mercy college students partner with kids at local schools and clinics to model a lifetime love of reading.

We believe that reading IS a social justice issue.
