Ryan's Street Hockey Event: Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation
Organized by: Ryan Goldstein
It's here! The Mattie Miracle Cancer Walk - May 21, 2017
May 15, 2017
EVENT DATE Nov 20, 2016
My name is Ryan Goldstein and my Bar Mitzvah is March 12, 2017. I am running a street hockey team event (and ongoing toiletry drive) on November 20 to raise funds for the Mattie Miracle Cancer Foundation. $10 entrance fee per participant. Additional donations are also accepted and appreciated.
I chose to do a street hockey event for my mitzvah project because I love hockey. As most of you know, my father helps runs the in-town street hockey league in the winter. I have been playing in the league since it started. Before the league began, my father organized pick-up hockey games in Millburn so I could play street hockey with my friends. This is how the whole league started.
I have been aware of the work of the Mattie Miracle cancer foundation from my bubbe (grandmother). Mattie Miracle was created in memory of Mattie Brown who lost his battle with cancer at the tender age of 7. Mattie's parents learned firsthand the need for psychosocial support and services during their son's cancer journey and the role these services must play for families in bereavement care. Mattie's parents, Peter Brown and Vicki Sardi-Brown were and are determined to use their experience to help other children and their families through similar struggles. The foundation is multifaceted: it raises awareness of childhood cancer and its impact on patients and families, it advocates for those families needs, and it provides support at Georgetown University Hospital in many large and small ways from toiletries and treats to financial resources.
My bubbe knows Mattie's parents and shared the story with me. A couple of years ago, bubbe and I drove down to Virginia to participate in the annual "Mattie Miracle Walk". The experience made an impact on me and I would like to help them. We will be helping in three ways: the street hockey event, a toiletry drive and participating in the walk. I look forward to personally delivering the funds raised from the street hockey event and the collected toiletries when my family and I participate in the "Mattie Miracle Walk" in May 2017.
Please join us...come play some hockey, cheer on a friend, buy some refreshments and help a good cause.
