Nearly a billion people worldwide lack access to clean water
 for drinking and personal hygiene.
ABOUT WATER IN AFRICA is trying to change that.
Will you help?

How It Started

It started with family. In 2006, Solange Cypel and her two sisters traveled to Cameroon, West Africa, to explore the roots of their paternal grandfather. In his ancestral town of Kribi, they discovered that their relatives were among the many poor without access to clean drinking water.

Goals, Impact, and Methods

Their initial goal was to help the local community organize around its need for clean water. The people in and around Kribi formed a group called Madiba M Mboa, which means, in the Batenga language (one of the languages spoken in Kribi), “water in our village.”

Based in Europe and the United States, About Water in Africa and MADIBA M MBOA are working together to bring safe water and ecological toilets to people in need.

Since 2009, the organization has raised more than $50,000 to finance wells with manual pumps. These new pumps have enabled 700 children from the elementary and middle schools and hundreds of families of Bongandoue to have access to safe drinking water FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THEIR LIVES. They have also built 6 ecological toilet stalls at Kribi High School.

For the Next Project, We Need $6,000

Our next goal is to build ecological toilets for the school in Grand Batenga, a coastal village in Cameroon about halfway between the port of Kribi and the Guinean border to the south. Its school, which serves 800 students, has no access to safe and cleans sanitations.  The lack of private toilet facilities at the school means that girls in particular are often denied the opportunity for an education.

Our methods are proven: About 30% of the money we raise is spent on training local leaders in community organization, and on providing local residents with the necessary construction skills to build and maintain the facilities. Thus, the improvements that are made are sustainable within the local community, not imported from outside.  The results are far-reaching: When people are empowered to make their own lives better, their behavior changes, the environment is better protected, and the community learns it can organize and advocate for better living conditions and take responsibility for and pride in the results.

Can you help us get to 100% funding? Can you help us help these communities help themselves? Can you make a donation to transform peoples’ lives?

100% of the funds raised by ABOUT WATER IN AFRICA are applied to the wells- and facilities-construction projects, not to administrative overhead. Donations are fully tax-deductible through our affiliation with the King Baudouin Foundation United States, our fiscal sponsor.

KBFUS is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a public charity, as defined in Sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code.
