Sabrina's Global Leadership Forum Dream
Organized by: Sabrina Churchwell
My name is Sabrina, and I am just a young teenager trying to make her dream a reality. I reside in a very under served rural town in East Tennessee. Since I was a child, education has played a fundamental role in my life. I always wanted to learn more and make something of myself. Unfortunately, proper education does not seem to be taken as seriously as it should be. Many people here do not dare to dream, so it has become widely accepted that all one needs to learn are the fundamentals for surviving in this small town.
My ambition is to establish a program which could assist those who wish to develop a better education and further their knowledge of the world. I would also like to start a program which would promote environmental sustainability and could help clean up the environment. In order to successfully establish these programs, a certain skill set is necessary.
Thus proves my reasoning to apply for the Global Leadership Forum, or GLF. GLF is a 2-3 week summer program established by United World College, or UWC.
I believe I could gather greater leadership skills and valuable business tips if I were to be accepted into this program. However, being an American applicant, my chances of getting a scholarship are already cut in half. Regardless, I will apply for one and maybe -just maybe- I'll get it!
The program will take place on the UWC-USA campus in Montezuma,New Mexico. In the program, complex issues such as globalization, diplomacy, conflict, peace, and environmental sustainability are all incorporated alongside New Mexico's rich cultural heritage. Carefully organized travel expeditions use the community at large as a classroom and involve interaction with local teens and community leaders.
This type of education hands-on, intellectually rigorous, and collaborative emancipates teens from the idea that they cannot do anything about the issues in their community. The program has three phases. Phase one, the "Castle Phase," begins in Montezuma. During this phase, we'll be getting to know one another, touring the campus, going on incredible hikes, and participating in project workshops. In the next phase, the "Culture Phase" in Santa Fe, we will be learning about Native American agriculture, soaking up the live music and experiencing Southwestern culture.
During the concluding phase, the "Adventure Phase," we'll be packing up and heading to Colorado to experience the wilderness, we will go to a wolf sanctuary on a Native American reservation and help run the facility, and we will explore striking views on a summit hike. On the final day of GLF, everyone will participate in the fun-filled Cultural Show!
GLF welcomes students ages 15-18. I would like to apply the summer of my freshman year, and gather the necessary funds until then. The total cost of the program is approximately $3000, excluding transportation costs. I am looking for donors that will contribute to help me build my future. Any amount of money would be greatly appreciated! Your assistance would not only benefit me, but my community for the actions I would bring upon it! Thank you.
