THE STORY:

“My parents come over on a slave ship from Africa about twenty year ‘fore I was born on ‘da William Driver plantation down in Florida…” -Andrew Simms, age 80, from Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers’ Project, 1936-1938.

Their voices still echo in time...ordinary people catapulted into a violent journey that forever changed the history of our world. And now, Moore Dance Project brings their true experiences to the stage with Sacred Slave Stories.

A contemporary ballet inspired by some of the most compelling interviews with more than 2,000 formerly-enslaved African Americans as documented by the Federal Writers’ Project (1936-1938), Sacred Slave Stories will tour throughout Florida during Black History Month 2011. Performances will attract more than 6,000 audience members across Orange, Seminole, Lake, Osceola and Volusia Counties. Televised performances are expected to reach an additional 3.2 million viewers, and special presentations will be delivered free of charge to 2,500 underserved children from Title I public schools.

Sacred Slave Stories unfolds as a series of living memories that reveal deeply personal accounts of a people’s collective courage, sacrifice and resilience. But even greater than its apparent tragedy, Sacred Slave Stories resonates with profound hope—and relentless joy—to accurately portray the humanity of those who refused to be diminished by an unjust world.

Project Objectives:
● Encourage the use of art as a meaningful and productive tool for expressing, documenting and evaluating one’s history, beliefs and experiences.
● Provide access to and encourage future attendance at cultural events that celebrate diversity and validate the experiences of minority populations.
● Assist underserved schools in obtaining new and creative tools that educate and inspire students beyond what current limited school resources allow.
● Foster partnerships with private and corporate donors that enhance the organization’s ability to present ongoing programs that enrich the community culturally, financially and artistically.
