Youth Connections Unlimited (YCU) organizes and facilitates volunteer mentoring programs for youth in the Sacramento County Probation Department. Over the last 10 years, more than 1,000 volunteers have provided services to more than 20,000 youth. Since the start of YCU’s mentoring program in 2009, recidivism rates for participants have dropped from approximately 85% to about 20 %.
This just doesn’t mean better outcomes for at-risk youth and their families. It represents a significant savings to taxpayers. Incarcerating one youth in Sacramento County can be more than $100,000 per year for non-violent offenses, whereas YCU can mentor a youth for about $1,500. For cash-strapped counties, this savings is critical. More importantly, such programs make life-saving changes in at-risk communities.
Unfortunately, 2010’s County budget cuts gutted YCU’s programs. While YCU still provides mentoring to incarcerated and probationary youth, the County has stopped providing any financial support, requiring YCU to survive on donations from individuals.
Youth Connections Unlimited needs funding from private foundations and public entities, but in order to get there, we need bridge funding from people like you to rebuild our program.
Help YCU provide hope to Sacramento County youth, make our communities safer and save taxpayers money. Give now and invest in a better future for Sacramento.
