My Safe Families Story

Our family began hosting in the spring of 2013. Since then we have hosted over a dozen kiddos, ranging from ages 5 months to 8 years. Sometimes they have floated in and out of our lives in a mere weekend; and others have stayed for up to 3 months. Each time, when the phone makes that “ding” sound and a message comes through regarding a child in need, my heart gives a little jump. Many times, shortly after I read the message I call my husband and say, “What do you think?” “Can we do it?” If he and I decide it’s a GO, then we proceed to talk with our boys, who are now 8 and 12 years old. We have always said that we will only take a placement if the entire family is in agreement. The majority of the time, my boys are asking when we will get our next Safe Families kid.

How did we get here? Well, God has never really given Dave and me a definitive answer as to whether our family is “complete” or not. We think maybe this is God’s way of keeping us on our toes. Since we are a family that has always been open to adoption, foster care, and other options for “extra kiddos,” Safe Families was a natural fit for us.

Hosting children has made such an impact in our family’s lives. Our boys will forever be changed in how they live, knowing that there will always be the possibility of sharing their room, their toys,  meals, our car, their parents with a complete stranger. My husband and I constantly are “ready” for a 3rd child to enter in to our home for an unknown amount of time. Knowing that child will also leave our home at some point feeling more of God’s love and knowing he or she was a part of our family for a time.

This is our Safe Families story. This is why we do what we do. Being the hands and feet of Jesus. It’s messy, it doesn’t always end with a fairytale ending; but it’s Christ’s love being lived out by normal people on a daily basis.

Safe Families for Children Story

Meet God in what he is doing in Indiana!

Starting on #Giving Tuesday, November, 29, 2016, through the month of December, we are collecting donations that will change lives in Indiana

WHO WE ARE: Safe Families for Children is a movement of compassion where the local church and volunteers partner to walk alongside families in crisis. These volunteers open their both their homes and lives, creating a safe harbor where children in crisis can see the love of Jesus while their parents or guardians receive case coaching and support to gain stability for their family.

WHO WE SERVE Every child we serve is a potential deflection from an overwhelmed foster care system. By reaching families on a volunteer basis, we can show them the love of Jesus while helping them establish attainable life goals, set healthy boundaries and cultivate relationships that will provide stability. Most of our services are provided on a volunteer basis; however, since we do not receive state or federal funding, we are dependent on donations to coordinate services, but your dollars have a greater impact than they doing being filtered through a government program to reach the same child.
