Safe Haven Humane Society and Outreach Center is a grassroots, completely volunteer-run, nonprofit organization near Green Bay, WI. We're participating in this challenge to raise awareness about and funds for our Pets are Family Program, which educates people about responsible pet ownership and the lifetime commitment that comes with adding a pet to the family. Our program motto is "Pets are family, and family is forever!" During a pet's lifetime, its humans are going to experience a number of changes in their lives (heading to college, getting married, moving, having a baby, changing jobs, moving again, illnesses, lifestyle changes, more babies, moving again), and we want people to understand that pets aren't disposable no matter what life brings to the people who care for them.
Safe Haven's primary goal is to keep pets with the families who love them. In addition to a variety of presentations, workshops, and community events that provide people of all ages important information about responsible pet ownership (pet health and safety, the importance of spay/neuter, handling behavioral and training issues, etc.), we offer a number of resources for struggling pet owners. Safe Haven helps find pet friendly housing for people who are moving, provides behavioral training resources for people experiencing issues with their pets, offers veterinarian vouchers for people who need medical assistance for their pets, and offers temporary housing for pets of people in transition due to domestic violence, illness, military service, or homelessness.
When all else fails and a pet must be rehomed, Safe Haven provides a comfortable and home-like animal sheltering environment, complete with an individualized care plan, any needed behavioral or health rehabilitation services, and a comprehensive evaluation and profiling system that will assure the pet's best opportunity at finding a perfect forever family. Safe Haven is a life-saving animal shelter that is committed to rehoming every single pet that enters our doors. During our existence, we have only euthanized one animal (a cat who suffered from a lengthy and agonizing illness and was no longer getting any comfort from medications). In fact, currently Safe Haven has two pets (an 18-year-old cat and a 12-year-old dog) who have been deemed "too special" to rehome but still have a lot of life left to live. For those reasons, they were placed in loving forever foster families where they are enjoying the rest of their days (and hopefully years) without fear of another transition or hardship. (Roxy is pictured spending a hot summer day in her very own kiddie pool.)
Safe Haven currently is searching for a new building that will allow us to expand our Pets are Family program and services and also provide more adequate space to comfortably shelter homeless pets while they wait for their forever families. We hope you will support us with a donation in any amount, and we'd love to have you join our team of fundraisers too! You can do all of that right here on our fundraising page.
