SAFE Haven - A Safe Mothers Safe Babies Project
Organized by: Stephanie Hackett
For the past 8 years, Safe Mothers Safe Babies (SAFE) has been providing comprehensive community-based services to ensure no mother or child dies during child birth.
Help us build a permanent SAFE Haven to support women and their families!
SAFE BY THE NUMBERS:
Serves over 100,000 people every year.
Trains over 400 community members in maternal and child health and community mobilization
Installed 25 Solar Suitcases to ensure no woman delivers her baby into darkness
Partners directly with 9 health centers and 1 hospital
Operates 3 motorcycle ambulances to ensure any laboring mother can make it to a hospital
Here is where we need YOUR help!
Through the generous support of two SAFE donors, we have been able to purchase land and start building a permanent haven of support for women families in the Iganga District of Eastern Uganda.
With your help we can finish building our SAFE Haven. This compound will house:
- Pharmacy: this small pharmacy will be stocked with supplies essential for maternal and child health survival. They will be distributed to "Healthy Entrepreneaurs" who are local champions for maternal and child health, and have been trained to provide accurate health education to their local community as well as sell health products at low prices to those rural community members without access. The pharmacy will also be stocked with life saving medical equipment that it will distribute to area health centers when they experience frequent government stock outs.
- Garden: This garden will not only provide nutritious food to our community memebers, but it will be used to train 15 SAFE community groups (with more than 400 members total!) in sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and managing an income generating project.
- Educational Resource Center: This resource center will serve as pivital hub for SAFE training activities. SAFE provides comprehensive trainings to midwives, nurses, doctors, local leaders, and community members to address gaps in critical lifesaving maternal and child health knowledge.
By supporting our SAFE Haven, you ensure that SAFE remains a permament member of the community so that we can continue saving the lives of women and children across the region!
