Safe Humane Chicago recognizes the connections between animal abuse and interpersonal violence and the benefits of the human-animal bond with a range of innovative programs that extend broadly across the city of Chicago and reach the people and animals whose lives are affected daily by violence and animal abuse. Youth Leaders and Lifetime Bonds are designed to cultivate compassion among our community’s most valuable resource, its young people. Collaborative Justice programs, including Court Case Dogs and Court Advocacy provide valuable knowledge and skills for those involved with the criminal justice system and exposed to animal-related crime, including police officers, judges, court advocates, and our court case dogs.
We have two new pilot programs we are currently raising money for:
VALOR: Veterans Assisting the Lives of Rescues pairs veterans with shelter dogs. During VALOR sessions, veterans will help to train and socialize their dog teammates, at the same time developing a sense of empowerment by helping the dogs grow more adoptable, and gaining skills for employment working with pets.
Pet Retention Program in partnership with Chicago's municipal animal shelter, Chicago Animal Care and Control will include free training to underserved pet owners and a helpline to pair pet owners with available programs to help them keep their pets, such as low cost clinics and pet food banks.
