Medical & Hygienic Supplies for South Africa
Organized by: Amber Manley
EVENT DATE Jun 01, 2014
Since I can remember I have had a vision of being in a deep village in Africa, helping locals carry water or making mud houses in bright colored clothing. This vision is the beginning of my humanitarian dream.
My name is Amber and I am a Registered Nurse (ADN) who is continuing my education to obtain my Bachelor's in Science of Nursing through University of South Carolina Upstate. In the fall I received a school email informing nursing students about an opportunity to take a Community Health class abroad. My whole body screamed with exhilaration as I read over one of the healthcare missions included a "South African Village". The possibility of my vision becoming a reality is a dream come true. I will be able to assist refugees and those living under extreme conditions with health care needs and opportunities for a better life.
Both Nurses and Nursing Students through USC Upstate are partnering with Extreme-Response International, a nonprofit organization with missions in Africa. For 15 days, I will be visiting refugee camps and small townships doing things like healthcare assessments, medication administration, and teaching healthcare skills to assist individuals to get jobs as a CNA (nursing assistant).
During a Health-Care-Assessment Fair I will be giving out bags of hygienic supplies to many who have never seen a toothbrush. The bags include toothbrush, toothpaste, soap shampoo etc. which assists with overcoming the poor sanitation that is so common. For the refugees or villagers interested in learning CNA skills I will give out free blood pressure cuffs, gloves and stethoscopes.
100% of the donations will go directly towards theses items and other causes like providing clothing for those in need. My goal is to experience the smiles of all of the men, women, and children I meet during the Fair as they accept my small gifts to them. These people are so thankful for something so simple we take for granted. I hope to reach out to as many as my donations allow! Any overage will go towards purchasing goods and items from the markets I visit.
Help me touch the lives of South Africans! I am forever grateful to your contribution.
