Sahakari Abhiyan Nepal (SAN) Disaster Relief
Organized by: Katelyn Johnston
SAN is a grassroots non-profit working to alleviate poverty and improve living conditions in Nepal’s rural communities by providing tuition-free schools and fostering sustainable community development. Prior to the earthquakes we operated two Free Schools serving over 300 students, and also ran multiple community development projects in agriculture, sustainable development, entrepreneurship, and community health.
On April 25th a 7.8 earthquake struck our capital city of Kathmandu and the surrounding area. Thousands were killed and the survivors have been forced out into the open by repeated aftershocks, some over 6 in magnitude. We are grateful to report that none the students or staff at our schools were killed in the earthquake. However, we now desperately need food, water, shelter, and medicine for our students and their families. Temperatures are ranging from 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and it is frequently raining. We are short of safe drinking water and food.
The Impact of Your Donation
While the world is mobilizing to send aid to Nepal, that aid is slow to reach the ground where it is most needed, and especially rural locations. However, SAN is already established across Nepal. Your donation to SAN will be immediately sent to our team on the ground who will use it to help our students and their families. Furthermore, since we are grassroots every cent will go dirrectly into giving the aid that is needed most and none of your money will go towards maintaining bulky organizational overhead. We are grateful for whatever you are able to send. Every single dollar is appreciated!
Receipts for every purchase made with donated funds will be posted to our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/san.np), so you can track in near-real-time (internet disruptions allowing) the impact of every dollar you send.
For more information about SAN, please see our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/san.np
We will be regularly updating this Facebook page with information on the situation on the ground, stories from survivors, and records of how relief funds are being spent to help our community.
*This fundraising page is organized by our US team member, Kate Johnston. Please feel free to conteact her with any questions, or if you would like to support SAN further!
