"Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund" Truck Fundraiser

THE STORY:

The Steven A Hunter Hope Fund was established in 2006 for the purpose of providing assistance to the students of the Portsmouth City School District that have financial needs. The fund has been broadened to provide services to additional area schools as well. It has long been established that the devastating effects of poverty on these students can seriously impede their ability to grow, learn, and develop socially.


It is the desire of Steven's Hope Fund to do more to try to have a positive impact on the lives of these precious children. With that is mind, we decided to move into the area of nutrition. Hunger is a serious stumbling block for school aged children.

Our review of statistics from Feeding America reveal that almost one in three children living in Scioto County are considered "food insecure", meaning they do not know where their next meal is coming from. This means that the children in our local schools are among the most vulnerable to suffer from the problems associated with hunger in the home. The sad reality is that many of these children are going without proper nutrition or, in some cases, with no food at all over the weekend, their only meals being provided at breakfast or lunch through the school system.

The Steven A Hunter Hope Fund has proposed and initiated a program with the assistance of the Portsmouth City School District, New Boston Local School District, Northwest Local School District, Valley Local School District, Washington-Nile Local School District, Green Local School District, Clay Local School District, Bloom-Vernon Local School District, and Minford Local School District and the Cincinnati FreeStore FoodBank to try to address the problem of weekend hunger for our elementary aged school children.

The program is Steven's Power Pack Club. Through the program, food is distributed to these elementary school children to be taken home for the weekend. The school system determines the eligibility based on the free and reduced lunch program and upon recommendation of the children's teachers. The "food packs" are purchased by the Steven A Hunter Hope Fund from the Cincinnati FreeStore FoodBank.

The Hope Fund needs a truck to transport all of the "food packs" to their respective schools. As of now the Fund is relying on the Cincinnati FoodBank to ship the packs and this is beooming a growing concern of ineffeciency as the program grows in size.
