The Sailing Vessel Denis Sullivan needs your help to install a new main mast! Since her official launch in 2000, the S/V Denis Sullivan, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit owned and operated by Discovery World in Milwaukee, WI has operated as a floating classroom, United Nations Environment Program flagship, and an ambassador for the State of Wisconsin. Each year over 7,500 students, adults, and families cross the Denis Sullivan decks and engage in informative tours, educational day sails, and experiential overnight expeditions. Hands-on science curriculum is combined with the experience of learning to sail a tall ship and gaining a unique perspective of the rich history, culture, and industry of Wisconsin, the Great Lakes, and our world’s most important resource-freshwater.
The only replica of a 19th century three-masted Great Lakes schooner in the world, the S/V Denis Sullivan was built by nearly 1,000 dedicated volunteers who donated over one million hours over five years to see their dreams take shape. Her original masts were generously crafted and donated by the Menomonee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin with wood from their reservation, and have since become a source of pride and storytelling for the crew and volunteers.
After twelve years of programming and sailing around the Great Lakes and beyond, the S/V Denis Sullivan now requires a new mast in order to maintain her certifications that allow the schooner to be a unique educational resource for thousands of individuals each year. Replacing, shaping, and laminating the wood is no small feat. We need all hands on deck to raise $12,000 to ensure that the S/V Denis Sullivan will continue to bring her mission to ports across the Great Lakes and beyond.
Take the plunge and help us reach our goal! Spread the word to friends, family, and fellow lovers of our Great Lakes!
