In April, I will make the journey to Boston to participate in the Boston Marathon thanks to the gracious sponsorship of John Hancock, allowing me to participate in this event and fulfill a lifelong dream. As part of my sponsorship, I will be running for charity. I have chosen to raise funds and run in honor of the Saint Charles Community College Foundation, who currently houses the Career Exploration Alliance Program, which I have had the pleasure to be involved with for the past several years.
In 2011, several local professionals and business owners in the St. Charles County area that were participating in the Vision St. Charles County Leadership Program decided we wanted to complete a group project to influence future professionals. The primary goal of this project was to encourage students to explore career options as soon as possible within their school districts in order to allow them to he opportunity to learn more about their areas of interest and determine the path they would need to follow to make their career interest a reality. We felt the need to allow for career readiness skills around professional etiquette, career research, interviewing, etc. Through a lot of hard work with research, presentations and sharing our mission and vision with other groups in the community, we were able to partner with other groups and find a "home" with the Saint Charles County Community College Foundation to keep our mission alive after we graduated from the Vision Leadership Program in 2012.
Fast forward to 2016, the vision has become a reality and we officially launched the program. The local school districts throughout St. Charles and Lincoln Counties are participating in the program to allow their students the opportunity to job shadow, mentor, and have in-class presentations with local business owners and employees in the field of the student's interest. This program was made possible through fundraising from many companies in the area and by the school districts committing to pay for each experience. Currently the program is funded for the first 3 years. We would love to continue the fundraising to allow as many students as possible the opportunity to determine what their interests may relate to in a career field and how that relates to the decisions they make today both in personal and educational settings. The business owners and companies participating have the ability to share more information about themselves, their careers, and their businesses to local students allowing them to attract the right talent and enhance awareness in the local area.
